After nearly 45 years in the clinical echocardiography field, Bharatbhushan Patel is currently working in Research with Dr. Partho Sengupta at Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey.
Bharatbhushan was raised and educated through secondary school in Kenya, then relocated to England to complete a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. He migrated to the United States in 1977 and completed training in General Sonography by 1979. His professional career began at a small community hospital in Hoboken, NJ, where he performed all phases of ultrasound imaging, with a primary focus on adult cardiac sonography. He achieved ARDMS certification in early 1983, followed later by vascular certification from CCI.
Bharatbhushan progressed to supervising a medium-sized ultrasound team and eventually assumed the role of manager in the Non-Invasive Cardiology Department. In the mid-1980s he became a member of the American Society of Echocardiography and other professional societies including SDMS, AIUM, and SVS. Bharatbhushan was selected to volunteer on ASE’s inaugural global outreach events to Sirsa, India, and later participated in events in Bangalore (India), Tartagal (Argentina), and Morgantown (West Virginia).
Throughout his time as an ASE member, Bharatbhushan has served the ASE Foundation as a committee member, later as Co-Chair of the Annual Appeal Committee, and currently serves as a Board Member. He has been an invited guest speaker for the Indian Academy of Echocardiography and has contributed to sonographer education in India on multiple occasions. He sponsors one cardiac sonographer from India attend the annual ASE Scientific Sessions. In addition to clinical work, he co-authored a chapter in an echocardiography review textbook.
