Patients Scanned
ASE Foundation volunteers traveled to Eldoret, Kenya to collaborate with the the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH). Working along side MTRH staff, our team surveyed children at 3 primary schools in Western Kenya over 4 days, looking for undiagnosed heart disease, and provided training for local clinicians. The event provided MTRH with valuable information on the potential burden of acquired, particularly rheumatic, and congenital heart disease in the greater-Eldoret area.
This event was supported by a grant from the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation Every Heartbeat Matters program.

Resourcefulness At Work
The site of the first day of scanning, the Ndurio Primary School in Kaptumo, Kenya, had a single room with electricity so the team brought with them everything needed. The single room accommodated all 7 scanning stations, camping cots served as beds; small stools doubled as places for the sonographers to sit and as machine stands; room dividers for privacy were constructed with ropes, sheets, and tarps.
1,000+ Students Scanned in 4 Days
The team visited 3 primary schools in Kenya and across 4 days, they scanned 1,092 students. All of the children that presented with pathology are in the process of being plugged into the MTRH clinic for follow-up and further testing.
