The Richard E. Kerber Ethics/Humanitarian Lecture was established in memory of ASE Past President Richard “Dick” E. Kerber, MD, FASE. Dr. Kerber championed issues of morality and ethics and how medicine fits into the broader world. To honor his legacy, this bi-annual lectureship addressed an ethical dilemma or humanitarian patient care activity.

In 2025, this lectureship was renamed the Kerber-Kirkpatrick Ethics/Humanitarian Lecture, in memory of ASE Foundation Past Board Chair, James Kirkpatrick, MD, FASE, who passed earlier this year. Dr. Kirkpatrick was also a champion of ethics and humanism in medicine and presented the inaugural Richard E. Kerber Ethics/Humanitarian Lecture, “Ethical Challenges in the Practice of Echocardiography: What is Right and How Do We Do It?” in 2018.

Beginning in 2026, the Kerber-Kirkpatrick Ethics/Humanitarian Lecture will be presented annually at the ASE Scientific Sessions. The award will provide funding to permit a faculty member to attend who embodies and continues Dick and Jim’s legacy of service to the community and their ethical underpinnings.

This lecture is chosen by the ASE Scientific Sessions Program Committee. If you would like to nominate someone for the committee to consider, please email [email protected].
